Alexander and Emily Fazzino (Dateline)

Did you catch “The Quiet One” on Dateline NBC this past week?

It was the story of Alexander and Emily Fazzino.  Emily, 32, went to take a bath, according to her husband Alexander. He said about 30 minutes after she went up to take a bath, he still heard the water running.  So he went to check on his wife.  He found her in the bathtub purple, with her tongue swollen.

Alexander was arrested and charged with Emily’s murder. He went to trial, and was found not guilty.

After watching the show, I found this article to share some very interesting facts.

What do you think?  Do you think Alexander is innocent or do you think he is lying?

I think there is some fascinating elements to this case.

This one was challenging for me but I think Alex killed Emily.
    1) A seizure in the tub could possibly cause the head trauma but I don’t think a seizure or any accident could also cause bruising on BOTH sides of the neck. And I don’t think a person can bruise at all after they are already deceased. Which Emily clearly was.
    2) I don’t think the first words out of my mouth would be “my wife is killing, or killed, herself” upon finding my spouse cold and blue in the tub. Maybe later that night at the police interview. But in that moment wouldn’t the most obvious thing to say be “Help I just found my wife cold and blue in the bathtub.” Even now, with pathologists stating cause of death undetermined, Alex is unwavering that it was somehow drug related.
    3) It bothers me that the bath caddy is pretty much intact. A seizure violent enough to cause head trauma would likely cause the caddy to be kicked and upset. Apparently no one reported seeing Emily already having the bruising before her death. Dragging Emily out of the tub also would likely cause the caddy to be upset since the tub isn’t very big. And choking her to death in the tub also would likely cause it to be knocked over.
Those are my 3 red flags and my 2 cents!

I don’t agree with the jury verdict either. I think we could write many paragraphs on this case! Thanks for sharing your opinion, Jennifer! I don’t disagree.

She had a head trauma! The bruse!

No petechial hemorrhaging, no fractured hyoid bone, look at the neck of a person that strangled to death and you will see the difference, it’s obvious. This poor girl hit her head and was knocked out long enough to drowned I don’t know why the autopsy didn’t check her lungs for water, her brain for hematoma, subdural or otherwise… Actually I’m quite sure why they didn’t do the autopsy it was because it was so obvious that she died from a tub accident. One of the most common deaths there are. You guys, I swear to ^… You might not like how he looks but this guy is innocent.

Based on your additional research, it sounds like the Dateline episode left out a lot of exculpatory details, even though overall it did seem sympathetic to Alex. My assumption was that the prosecutors had a lot more compelling evidence than we were shown since the case seemed very thin against the defendant the way it was presented. Why do you think they brought this case against him?

I agree that I believe Alex killed Emily. If the bath was running for half an hour , surely the bath tub would have overflowed. Also, it’s odd that he would use the present tense, “my wife is killing herself, ” as if she were conscious and he saw what she was doing. If she were unconscious when he found her, how would he know what his wife’s intentions were? He was trying to plant the idea in the 911 operator’s mind that that was what happened. Also, I saw no tears when Alex fake cried. In addition, one policeman stated, “Alex showed no interest in his wife when I was trying to revive her.” Lastly, even if Emily fell and hit her head, there would not be bruises on either side of her neck.

If you want 911 paramedics to come save your wife, you don’t keep screaming HELP nine or ten times, you tell them what the problem is and where to come. Too much drama, too high of a pitch to his voice in the 911 call. Also, when paramedics arrived, he hollered out “Help Me” instead of ‘Help Her’. That was a Freudian slip of the tongue if you ask me! I also noticed his grieving horizontal forehead wrinkles vs the grieving between-the-brow vertical wrinkles of her family’ when talking about her death. His is not the same grieving expression! When asked about the town folk calling him a murderer, he replies “that’s what they say” as he nods his head yes. So it weren’t true, why then did he nod his head to confirm it? Also he said he heard her head hit as he was pulling her from the tub, but he hesitated and stumbled for an answer and his eyes went all over the place when asked where on the tub. Guilty!

The timing of the death – weeks out from divorce/custody proceedings – rings instant alarm bells. Fazzino’s insistence that ‘she killed herself’ right from the first seconds of the 911 call, rather than focusing on just getting some urgent help, is another big sign. Then there are the bruises and toxicology report. The prosecution probably didn’t do enough to turn around Emily’s drug issue in their favour. Rather than being a sign of instability and a potential cause of death, this was the very thing that enraged Alex about her and something he needed to protect his children from at all costs.

The toxicology report was also positive
for amphetamines,, I paused it and read the report, the only reason
for a doctor to prescribe that would be for weight loss, ADHD,
narcolepsy ( falling asleep in the middle of a sentence is the type
of narcolepsy that would need speed )… So, did she have a meth
habit? I still think this is beside the point, it is so obvious to me
that she fell and hit her head… Try to maneuver in a tub with baby
oil and hot water… Come on!

    COME ON!!

Hot water, baby oil, porcelain, and a bruise on her head… This only adds up to one thing and the prosecuting attorney and anyone that thinks otherwise are… Well… All I can say is really ignorant, and what a waste of time just to encourage all the idiots in the world to think this poor father is a murderer.
