Who is truthful: Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson or Trump?

I was flabbergasted when I saw a poll on MSNBC today that asked readers to share who they believed: Donald Trump or Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson?

When I saw 36% of people in a poll response of over 248,770 votes believe Donald Trump, I had to take a minute and post.

I have watched Trump talk and I have watched Johnson talk, and there is no doubt who is being honest in my mind.

I do not believe Donald Trump at all and I absolutely believe Johnson without question.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Trumps 10’s of thousands of fake email address he bought from FB and Twitter are voting to beef up the voting. Has anyone checked the R’s freerepublic message board to see if they sent out a call to vote to further trash a bereaved widow? They frequently post a link for surveys for members to vote on to make it look there are more alt right voters than there may be.

Eyes, thank-you! As I saw more of the story, I immediately headed for your blog, hoping you may have seen it and posted. This is beyond the pale, and I do not have the words to express my disgust.

As a data scientist, my conclusion is that this poll is very much like many polls – interesting but it would be inaccurate to generalize from these results until there is more known about how the data were collected and analyzed. I agree with the data scientists who say that contemporary polling is highly inaccurate in some situations. Right now we don’t know if these results are based on solid statistical methods or not. I agree with Eyes that it’s shocking that such a high percentage of nearly a quarter of a million votes believe with President Trump. That result seems highly unlikely to me unless the sample is not representative the population, but I don’t have more evidence to support or refute my belief. In general I don’t have much confidence in the results of any poll until I know the methods are solid, and that doesn’t happen nearly as often as I would like, including this poll about President Trump and Myeshia Johnson.

Would you happen to have a pre-existing opinion of President Trump that perhaps slants your opinion? What is your opinion of the cowboy hat wearing senator? Does she have an agenda?

Is there clean video of this soldier’s wife talking? This video is a hot mess. Would Trump have said something like that? …as in, does it go along with the character he has displayed thus far? Oh, you betcha. I say it fits his level of consideration for others. However, I want to look at this soldier’s wife as well. Just to listen and observe, not to attack her. Anyone know of a video?

Where does this fall on the spectrum of honesty and deceit?:

[I heard what [Trump] said because the phone was on speaker. Basically he said, “Well, I guess he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt.” That’s what he said.]

Do you really think Trump said that, that he said “I guess…”. Do you really think Trump was cold and uncaring during the call?

My point is everyone is probably being honest. That’s how the congresswoman heard words, that’s now the gold star widow interpreted his words. If there was a tape available most people would not see it that wee.

I think it’s horrible the congresswoman turned the call into a political weapon, and I think the media is horrible for harping on with such intensity.

I didn’t really know what to think until I saw the press conference with Trump. I didn’t even have to see Eyes’ response to see that he was enjoying all the media attention, constantly reframing the questions so they better suited the “I’m such a great person” narrative. From that perspective, Trump wasn’t lying about not being disrespectful. Because he doesn’t have to – he genuinely believes that his presence in the widow’s life, even by phone call, was the greatest respect he could bestow.

That 36% lines up with Trump’s currently polling, those 91% of people who voted for him who say they still support him today. Doesn’t matter what he does, he will always be right in their minds, even if they know he’s lying, they’ll say he’s telling the truth. The only thing that will cut that 36% in half will be a PEE PEE tape coming out. From a cultural anthropology perspective, I don’t think the women of his base will be accepting of that.
