Dateline: Killing in Cottonwood

If you caught Dateline Friday night, they profiled the story of Mark & Karen Duenas.   One night Mark woke up when he heard a noise and found his wife Karen stabbed multiple times.  Mark says he had nothing to do with Karen’s murder. Karen died as a result of her injuries and Mark was eventually convicted of her murder after two trials. The first trial however voted to acquit 9-3, but one juror hung it up.

Having watched the show, I did not see any hot spots in Mark’s behavior.  This was an interesting case that left me wanting to see more of Mark.

I did find it odd that his “texting friend” testified that Mark said for anything to happen between them something “bad” would have to happen to his wife. That was the only red flag I found…which is not conclusive.

What did you think?

William Jody Byrd and Desta on Dateline NBC

I finally was able to catch up on last weeks news shows and I have to say they got me really worked up last night.

The clues to deception were rampant and flew in the wind like a red kite on a bright blue sky day. Within minutes of the episodes beginning, clues were revealed that identified the truth.  There was no mystery, sadly.

In this story, Desta Byrd is found by her husband in the front yard dead by her husband, “Jody”.  All you need to hear to know the story is B.S. is Jody’s 911 call.  His words speak volumes alone.

Then add that later in the show, the police reveal Jody’s phone records show that Jody didn’t even call 911 for help first. Instead, he called Jody’s parents.

I was very relieved to hear that Jody was convicted of murdering his wife and has been locked up.  The other case I watched however didn’t have the same outcome.

More to come soon!

Under a Halloween Moon Dateline NBC

Did you catch Dateline NBC last week? The story was titled “Under a Halloween Moon”.

It’s the story of Joel Lovelien and how he was murdered, and who did it.  Joel was at a bar with his fiancee when he went out to help a man out who missed a party bus, and ended up being beaten to death.  The story is quite interesting.

One man who was out that night is Travis Stay. He is seen being interviewed on Dateline NBC.

Travis gives me serious pause.  He shows almost no emotions, except when it comes to him. He had a black eye at the time he went to police, was the last person seen with Joel and he was found with blood on him. He also left part of his costume behind at the crime scene.

But what throws it over the top for me is when Travis says that he wants to apologize to Joel’s family for being part of the equation that night and for drinking and being reckless.

If you were put on trial for a murder you didn’t commit, would you have a need to apologize to the family, who wrongly thinks you committed a crime you didn’t? After enduring an entire trial, even though you were acquitted?  Most people would be really upset they were tried for something they didn’t do.  Not Travis.

Furthermore, Travis doesn’t remember what happened that night, but he tells us that Joel was his “only friend in the parking lot that night”?  Really?  How can he know that?

Travis’ thinking doesn’t square with me for someone whose been wrongly look at for a crime he didn’t commit.

Dateline NBC: Mystery In Mustang

Did you watch the “Mystery in Mustang” this past weekend on Dateline NBC?

Rebecca Bryan tells the story of an intruder breaking into their family home and shooting her Fire Chief husband at point blank range and then apologizing for it.

Her story couldn’t be any hotter than a baked potato out of the oven.  That’s all I can say.  She is a very unskilled liar, to say the least!

If you haven’t watched the show, I highly suggest it. This show is littered with clues!  The police definitely got this case correct. I have zero doubt.
