Breaking News: Thomas Bögerl Commits Suicide

According to an Eyes for Lies reader, and TMNews, Thomas Bögerl, a banker, whose wife was taken for randsom back in May of 2010 and was found dead beside a road not to long after, was also found dead today.  Apparently he committed suicide by hanging.

The Eyes for Lies reader wrote:

Just a quick update on the German Boegerl case that you wrote about in the past. It is just going through the various news outlets over here that today about noon, Thomas Boegerl has been found dead in the fitness room of his home by the housekeeper. It seems that he hanged himself. Police found a suicide letter, but there is no word yet as to its contents.

I went online and found this news article as well. I have translated this for you using Google Translation.

Rome, July 11 (TMNews) The German banker Thomas Boegerl, widower of Mary Boegerl, committed suicide, hanging himself in his home. He writes on his online version of Germany’s Die Bild tabloid, which also confirms the local police. The man’s lifeless body was found by the cleaning lady around 12 today.

Boegerl‘s wife was kidnapped in May 2010 and his body found in early June. His kidnappers and killers have left no trace, and after 14 months on the mystery woman’s death remains unsolved.

I was watching this case because the father, Thomas, when he spoke to the media pleading for his wife’s return didn’t display oblique eyebrows of sadness like his children did, and while it wasn’t conclusive of guilt by itself, it was a huge red flag. Thomas had several red flags in his behavior, and now with this suicide, you have to wonder what truly happened.

Update 7-12-2011

I read the news this morning, and apparently Thomas left a suicide note that was to his two children — it was private say police and won’t be released.  It was oddly one sentence and it didn’t give any reason or motive.  He was, however, in the care of a treatment facility for depression.  He was struggling to keep his job says one of his co-workers.  He left the treatment facility for the weekend, went home and killed himself.

Suspicions Mount Against Thomas Bögerl

The kidnapping and murder of Maria Bögerl has cause quite a stir in her German community outside of Hamburg. Suspicions and rumors are rampant with fingers being pointed toward Thomas Bögerl, banker husband of Maria. The stories grow stronger every day in spite of attempts by police to quell them.

The quieter the police are, the wilder and more insistent the rumors and speculations become. There are rampant stories, with people saying that Thomas is already being held in the jail.

Markus Ott, Heidenheimer police spokesman, has repeatedly denied these rumors. He has maintained that there is no evidence to incriminate Thomas Bögerl. He calls the stories ridiculous.

Bögerl received a call at his bank in which the caller informed him that his wife had been kidnapped. The kidnapper made threats to kill Maria if all of his demands weren’t met. The kidnapper told Thomas to meet him at a certain location, and he gave him the time and amount of ransom that would be required to save his wife’s life.

With no time to spare, Thomas attempted to gather the money from his bank. He rushed it to the designated drop off spot, however, he couldn’t meet the deadline and he was a little late. The money was never picked up.

Maria’s body was found three weeks later; she had died from stab wounds. She had been left in a field near her home covered with some branches. The area she was found in had been extensively searched by police earlier. Many do not understand how it could have been missed. This has caused doubt that the body was left there originally. This has set off even more suspicion.

There are more stories that Maria was killed two days before her reported kidnapping. This story appears to be false, because almost 20 people said they saw her the night before her disappearance. There has been no official time of death established, though, and that would be crucial in this case, because Thomas claims to have phoned his wife on the day of her kidnapping. There are many unanswered questions concerning this tragic death, with no answers being given. This leads to even wilder stories.

Eyes for Lies spotted this story because of the lack of apparent grief visible on the husband’s face. There was a marked difference in the children’s expressions in comparison to those of their father’s. Even though there could not be a determination of his guilt from this video, it raised some questions and so we are all interested in following this story as it develops.

Do you think there are any valid reasons for the people of Heidenheimer to speculate about the guilt of Mr. Bögerl?

Thomas Bögerl and Police Pass Blame

Holding Cell Phone and $100 Bill Stacks

The news today in the banker’s wife kidnapping is getting interesting. It appears from my translation that the German police and banker, Thomas Bögerl, are pointing fingers at each over why they didn’t get the ransom to the kidnappers in time — hence who is partially to blame for Maria Bögerl’s murder.

Read moreFor those of you who haven’t kept up on this story, sadly, Maria Bögerl’s corpse was found earlier this week, and her kidnappers have yet to be identified. While I haven’t made any opinions on the case, I did find Thomas Bögerl’s expressions interesting in this video (see comments), and that is why I am following this case. I do not think someone’s truthfulness can be determined by a facial expression alone, but I am curious if it was a clue.

The news reports that I have translated today say it was 11:30 (half to 12) when the phone rang at Thomas’ office, according to reports. A man with a Swabian accent was on the phone and demanded 300,000 euros in special notes, or he would kill Thomas’ wife, Maria. Thomas was given two and a half hours to get the money and deliver it, but Thomas didn’t get to the spot until 3:27, according to the news report. He just didn’t have enough time. The money sat there until the next morning, when it was inadvertently removed by a highway worker. The kidnappers never claimed it.

The police apparently are arguing that they offered to get the money, but that Thomas insisted he would use his (steal from the bank?). Thomas, however, says that he never insisted he’d get the money, as the amount was a concern. According to the Build, a German newspaper, Thomas informed the police he couldn’t come up with the money at 1:15.

The article doesn’t say how much money was gathered or where it came from, or if it does, I am losing it in the translation. I also have to wonder how far was the bank from Thomas’ office. CMA, a reader to the blog, has provided a more detailed comment, explaining it in more detail below as has “my name“.

Thomas Bögerl 27 Minutes Late with Ransom

Briefcase with bundles of American money

Maria Bögerl, the wife of a German banker, Thomas Bögerl, was kidnapped from the family home on May 12, 2010, according to her husband. He later plead for her safe return in the media along with his children. Sadly, Maria Bögerl’s corpse was found last week under some branches along side a road.

News came out this week that Thomas was a half-hour late in getting the random to its destination and that may be why the kidnappers never picked it up. You can read more here.

I have to say I thought it was odd that her body was covered with branches. If kidnappers killed her, would they care enough to cover her body with branches? I found that rather personal for kidnappers. I would expect kidnappers to simply dump her body.

I want to stress that while we are following this story because the facial expression of Thomas Bögerl were interesting and noteworthy, I do not believe that one facial expression alone is enough to identify if someone is honest or not. I am, however, interested to see the what happened in this case as things are unusual and they may or may not be explainable. Since I am not fluent in German, I cannot say anything with any certainty.

Thanks, Kassia, for the update.

Maria Bögerl Found Dead

Sadly, the German banker and his two children who pleaded for their wife/mother to be returned to them won’t be so lucky. Maria Boegerl’s corpse was found yesterday at the edge of a forest not far from their home under some branches. Police had found her car, but found little clues to help them find Maria.

Maria Bögerl, according to Thomas Bögerl, was abducted at her home and driven away in her own car, and held for ransom, but the kidnappers never took their random, which was put on a highway by Thomas as instructed, and were never heard from again.

It will be interesting to see this case evolve. I can’t say anything conclusively because of the language barrier, but I am curious why the father didn’t seem as upset as the children were. It may or may not be explainable.

Thanks to those of you who sent me this story!
