Chris Brown’s Mixed Messages

I think one thing is clear about Chris Brown’s “apology”: He is sending mixed messages. Brown starts out by saying, “I want to express my deepest regret and accept full responsibility.” He continues a few seconds later by saying, “I felt it was important that you heard directly from me that I am sorry.”

I’ve seen many scripted videos where people can’t pull off what they are saying regardless of a rehearsed script, but here Chris does. However, I am left with one big question. Who is Chris Brown apologizing to, and why?

To me, it seems like he is apologizing to us, his fans, but not to Rihanna, the woman he plead guilty to assaulting, only after he was given a plea deal. Brown says in the interview, “I’ve told Rihanna countless times and I am telling you that I am sorry.” The way Brown emphasizes the word “told” indicates he is frustrated that he hasn’t been forgiven by either Rihanna or the public (to which I don’t know). Frustration over not being forgiven is not a good sign.

Nowhere in the video does Brown address Rihanna publicly, which really makes his apology fall short, in my opinion. He may be genuinely sorry he kicked his career to the gutter because of his hot temper, but does this mean he really is sorry to the person he assaulted?

I personally don’t think so, or he would have addressed Rihanna herself.
