On Video: The Meeting of Joran and Stephany

June 10, 2010/in murder/by Eyes for Lies

Click to watch the CBS Early Show: Van der Sloot’s Meeting
with Flores at the casino in Lima, Peru.

Stephany apparently had no fear of strangers. From the looks of it, she walks right up to Joran van der Sloot, introduces herself and sits down. She was also very trusting to go back to his hotel room so quickly. There are reasons our parents tell us to be wary of strangers…

Shannon Price: It is a Microexpression

June 10, 2010/in microexpession/by Eyes for Lies

I watched an interview with Shannon Price on Entertainment Tonight earlier this week and I discussed how Shannon grins when she talks about what it was like to take Gary Coleman off of life support. It was flat out haunting, and at that time, I wondered if Shannon’s grin was a microexpression.

For me, at times, I have a hard time distinguishing if something is real-time or a quick-fleeting microexpression–I suspect because it is hard to know what others can’t see when you can see it. I hope that makes sense.

So to answer the question, officially, I contacted Dr. David Matsumoto, an expert in microexpressions, and he informed me that yes, this was indeed, a microexpression.

Dr. David Matsumoto also wrote, “…did you see the micro disgust around 00:39? There is also a unilateral disgust around 1:45. “

Thanks, Dr. Matsumoto, for sharing your expert opinion! I enjoy following Dr. Matsumoto’s work.

Kyron Horman’s Parents Acting Odd

June 10, 2010/in Uncategorized/by Eyes for Lies

Click photo above to see KATU News Video about Kyron Horman’s Parents

Kyron Horman has been missing for a week. According to reports, Kyron had a science project, so his stepmother, Terri Moulton Horman, drove him to school that morning, watched Kyron setup his display, took a photo of him and then looked around at other projects with Kyron before waving goodbye to him in the hallway and leaving.

Read moreAt 3:30, Terri went to the bus stop to meet Kyron, but the bus driver told her that he wasn’t on the bus, at which point Terri calls the school and finds out her son was reported as absent. There were people, however, who vouch for seeing Terri and Kyron at the school that morning.

It’s a big mystery–that’s for sure!

Several people have emailed me and made note of different oddities. The most notable oddity is that the parents of Kyron have not made any public pleas for their son where they talk to the media. Yes, this is strange. I agree. As parents, this would be the first thing you would expect them to do –to get the word out there. And if they didn’t want to go on camera, you would at least expect a spokesperson to get the word out there for them, but we don’t see that either.

Has anyone seen them on any searches? Are they searching for their son at all? This would be the second natural thing we would expect to see.

Others have sent me emails about how Terri is posting on her Facebook page in a nonchalant manner, which she has now made more private to prevent people from seeing her comments. On Terri’s Facebook page, she talked about posting flyers.

And then to see the news media approached the Horman parents in this interview and to see them walk away as if they have something to hide–that is amazing to me! You’d think they could say two words, wouldn’t you? Why not?

The Horman’s released a statement through the Sheriffs office yesterday at a press conference the Horman’s did not attend. You can hear it here.

Of course, I don’t believe we can say anything conclusive about this, but it sure does raise eyebrows, doesn’t it? If anyone sees the parents speak out, please let me know. I am interested to watch and listen to what they have to say.

I did find it odd that this retired police detective said to the news team in the video above that statements from families don’t really help investigators, but they help the community who is emotionally invested in a child’s disappearance. I wonder if he really said that, or if the media botched up his words somehow. That would be extremely odd, wouldn’t you think? You’d have to ask if he has ever seen “Lie to Me” or the science behind it.

Thanks to all the readers who share information with me.

Thomas Bögerl and Police Pass Blame

June 9, 2010/in Uncategorized/by Eyes for Lies

Holding Cell Phone and $100 Bill Stacks

The news today in the banker’s wife kidnapping is getting interesting. It appears from my translation that the German police and banker, Thomas Bögerl, are pointing fingers at each over why they didn’t get the ransom to the kidnappers in time — hence who is partially to blame for Maria Bögerl’s murder.

Read moreFor those of you who haven’t kept up on this story, sadly, Maria Bögerl’s corpse was found earlier this week, and her kidnappers have yet to be identified. While I haven’t made any opinions on the case, I did find Thomas Bögerl’s expressions interesting in this video (see comments), and that is why I am following this case. I do not think someone’s truthfulness can be determined by a facial expression alone, but I am curious if it was a clue.

The news reports that I have translated today say it was 11:30 (half to 12) when the phone rang at Thomas’ office, according to reports. A man with a Swabian accent was on the phone and demanded 300,000 euros in special notes, or he would kill Thomas’ wife, Maria. Thomas was given two and a half hours to get the money and deliver it, but Thomas didn’t get to the spot until 3:27, according to the news report. He just didn’t have enough time. The money sat there until the next morning, when it was inadvertently removed by a highway worker. The kidnappers never claimed it.

The police apparently are arguing that they offered to get the money, but that Thomas insisted he would use his (steal from the bank?). Thomas, however, says that he never insisted he’d get the money, as the amount was a concern. According to the Build, a German newspaper, Thomas informed the police he couldn’t come up with the money at 1:15.

The article doesn’t say how much money was gathered or where it came from, or if it does, I am losing it in the translation. I also have to wonder how far was the bank from Thomas’ office. CMA, a reader to the blog, has provided a more detailed comment, explaining it in more detail below as has “my name“.

Thanks to my German readers for sharing this story with me, and giving me updates.

Joran: Two Different Stories Already

June 9, 2010/in murder/by Eyes for Lies

Joran Van der Sloot (C) of the Netherlands is escorted by Peruvian police officers at the police headquarters in Lima June 5, 2010. Chile on Friday deported to Peru Van der Sloot who is wanted for the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores in Lima and has been linked to the 2005 disappearance of an American teenage girl in Aruba. REUTERS/Pilar Olivares (PERU - Tags: CRIME LAW POLITICS)

“El Comercio,” a Peruvian newspaper, is reporting (in Spanish) that Joran gave a totally different account of what happened the night Flores was murdered to Chilean officials on June 3 before he was deported back to Peru where he confessed to killing Flores.

Read moreJoran allegedly told the Chilean police that Stephany started talking to him at the casino, that later they were both in a car that was stopped by a white vehicle with 2 men wearing police uniforms (with shields and uniforms), who put them in their car and asked for money from Joran.

At some point, Joran talks about going back to his hotel room and finding a man in his bed, with a pistol in his belt, and another man emerged from the bathroom with a knife. One of the guys supposedly hit Flores. Joran says these were the same guys that pulled them over earlier.

I suspect the story goes that these men must have killed Stephany, at this point.

A reader of Eyes for Lies blog, “L”, gave me the heads up on this story (thanks!) and “L” suggests that Joran must not have realized that there were security cameras on him at this point.

Oops!! Do you think that might have helped the police get a confession? How many stories will Joran ultimately tell? He has a track record of changing things all the time.

The security/surveillance cameras are not going to give Joran much wiggle room, but I don’t believe Joran’s most recent confession, either, that he came back from getting coffee, and finds Flores on his computer searching for him. The idea that she was just sitting around in her underwear (and nothing else), goofing off on his computer, and then confronts a man she supposedly realizes is the “Joran van der Sloot”, I’m not buying that either. He still hasn’t come 100% clean, if you ask me, or maybe the police haven’t released all the details…
